A winch is the ultimate self-recovery tool for serious off-road driving. It lets you pull yourself out of situations that no amount of traction boards can solve.
Winch Buying Guide for Off-Road Vehicles in 2026

Sizing Your Winch
Buy a winch rated to at least 1.5 times your vehicle gross weight. A 5,000-pound Jeep Wrangler needs at minimum a 7,500-pound winch. Rounding up to 9,500 or 10,000 pounds provides a safety margin for deep mud.
Synthetic vs Steel Cable
Synthetic rope from Dyneema is lighter safer and easier to handle. If it breaks under load it falls to the ground rather than whipping like steel cable. Steel cable is more durable but heavier and more dangerous in failure.
Motor Types
Series-wound motors provide higher peak pulling power. Permanent magnet motors are more efficient and generate less heat. For serious recovery series-wound is the standard choice.
Top Brands
Warn is the industry standard. Smittybilt offers excellent value. Come Up and Superwinch provide solid mid-range options. Avoid no-name brands as winch failure during recovery can be dangerous.
