TOULOUSE, France – Using a heavy-caliber firearm and another weapon, a gunman opened fire at people outside“Ozar Hatorah” Jewish school in France on Monday that has killed a 30-year old Hebrew teacher, his two children, ages three and six-years-old and another 8-year-old girl who was the daughter of the school’s principal.
Toulouse prosecutor Michel Valet has confirmed that at least 15 shots were fired as the gunman starting shooting outside the school. After pursuing other children into the school and continuing to fire, Valet said the unidentified gunman fled on a heavy motorbike.
Parents spoke to Reuters about the incident which occurred just before 8 a.m. as students were being dropped off at the school.
"I saw two people dead in front of the school, an adult and a child ... Inside, it was a vision of horror, the bodies of two small children," a distraught father told RTL radio, Reuters reported.
French authorities have said that today's shooting is being connected to three soldiers who were killed in two separate incidents by a masked gunman who was also seen escaping from the scene on a motorbike.
The possibility of the shooter being a serial killer with racist motivations is being investigated.
"Everything leads one to believe that these were racist and anti-Semitic acts," Toulouse Mayor Pierre Cohen said on BFM-TV.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared at the school after rushing to Toulouse.
"This barbaric act cannot win ... We will find this killer,” Sarkozy said. “We must practice calm and caution.”
