Flashback to scribble jam days... no!! even further back than Okwerds. Underground and Independent Hip Hop was on that come up. Battling bridged the gaps between states all over the maps. Tapes traded hands, and Napster was brand new, so if you caught wind of someone through word of mouth, you would only be exposed to others from there.
I mean now-a-days you got kids who have access to computers to make extra shitty music. BUTT! Back then they were breaking out the 4-tracks, and making complete albums. Would you say they were on their grind, and better than whats going on now?
Here's some of those people, or groups that both had someone experienced in battling, and actually made careers.
Eyedea, Blueprint, Mac Lethal, Strong Hold (their whole squad battled), Atmosphere,Eminem, Anticon (sole, dose, etc.), Freestyle Fellowship, Living Legends, Odd Jobs (cressent moon), sage francis.. the list goes on
Battling most of the time, and in some cases now still is to promote their music. In that era I believe it was more effective.
Anyways, what's your two cents? Was the scene better then? Were they hippy faggots? Was their music better?
