Honestly I was both anticipating & dreading this event going in to it.
Live events = Good
URL/Smack = Good (I’m a fan of what they do)
Paying $75 for a NYC battle event = Ehh, this better be fun
8 hours of standing for 3 hours of entertainment? = Bad
I’d rather people just let these guys rap (*crickets* >>> boos), but overall I don’t think anyone got treated too unfairly last night.
Alright let’s get to the battles. I don’t really remember lines, but that's what the twitter feeds are for.
Charlie Clips vs B Magic
Charlie looked very uneasy before the battle started. B Magic was on an even keel, as always. I notice Charlie trying to psych Magic out with the yappin’ and I immediately think “This is going to be a long night for Charlie”. It was. Imo Magic won every round.
Charlie’s went first and his first was good, but not great. B-Magic did what B-Magic does and bar for bar Charlie can’t compete. You could see Charlie wasn’t pleased with the reaction Magic was getting so again he’s yapping and trying to psych Magic out.
Charlie’s 2nd was up and down but he had some haymakers. Magic another strong round and it really starts to sink in that Charlie Clips act has become a bit stale. He's never been great on camera and has become somewhat predictable live. As far URL goes he shouldn't take battles that don't excite him.
Charlie’s 3rd was a mess, I think he was booed at some points. He revealed that he’s battling Rex, which is easily the most interesting part of his 3rd. Magic has an opportunity to catch a BODY (on footage), but his 3rd was relatively light and settles for the clear W.
Some had it 2-1 Magic in the building. I’d anticipate more 3-0 Magic’s when the footage drops. Magic earned a spot on the SM3 card. The question is does he STILL want to battle Con? If not, who does he battle? Charlie shouldn't have taken this battle. He just didn't have enough to say, he tried to come with angles but those angles will look really silly on footage.
Jadakiss was standing front and center for this one, and you could tell by his reactions that he was fucking with B Magic HEAVY. Poison Pen was also going crazy over Magic. Occasionally Clips would look over at Pen & Kiss trying to give them the "y'all really thought that was hot?" face. Nigga was tight. Don't be tight Clips. Tighten up.
DNA vs Chilla
Chilla starts off pretty slow. Honestly I didn’t know WTF he was talking about at first. Maybe I wasn't fully paying attention but it might have just been too intricate to catch on the 1st listen. 2nd half of his first was really good though. DNA’s first was impressive all the way through. His voice & projection are off the charts (his rap hands are still terrible tho), everything just sounds better when DNA is saying it. DNA snatches the first & it seems like he has enough good material to make this one a battle.
In the 2nd Chilla starts really going off. I noticed that he’s picked up the pace and has learned to work the stage better. Fire Fire Fire round, one of the best of the night. I already started wondering what DNA was going to do in his 3rd because he needed a miracle to win the 2nd. DNA couldn't compete with Chilla's 2nd but he did a really good job of hanging in there. It felt like Chilla took all the air out of the room, but DNA somehow escaped the round breathing. He had some faulty angles but the material was performed well enough for it to sound hot in the room.
It’s 1-1 and Chilla has another crazy round, giving the people what they paid for. In the 3rd DNA had mic issues (not his fault), ends up getting some boos, does the “give me some words to freestyle” thing. A couple of the freestyles were meh but he had ONE that the crowd went crazy over. He finished up solid and ended up with an uneven but overall enjoyable round.
I had it Chilla 2-1 but overall DNA did pretty well, especially seeing as how he was on the verge of flaming out in the 3rd. DNA fans will be happy, some might even give him the W based off of his entertainment value. Poison Pen was front and center for this one, if you go by his reactions, Chilla destroyed DNA. Is there tension between Pen & DNA?
