Throughout history, there have been distinct elite classes. Kings, emperors, and nobles are part of this elite class. Remember those stories of peasants being excited to see the king or needing to bow before a noble? Those stories, and the values in them, still apply today. Millions of people go to see the President speak; an entire demographic listens to Congress (old folks).
Historically, it has been this elite class, and its power thru govt. that has had the people anxious. Picture the French Revolution, or the Soviet one. Almost every single country in the world has had some kind of political struggle -- people vs. govt. This has historically been the big-scale conflicts we've seen between those with little power and those with a lot of it.
Now, all the real power in the world, unbeknownst to the public, is increasingly going to large corporations from governments. Literally, this piece of global legislation is so secretive that "the cover mandates that the chapter not be declassified until four years after the Trans-Pacific Partnership comes into force or trade negotiations end". We've seen senators and global leaders rallying against this. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a proposed trade agreement (and is being strongly pushed by the Obama administration of all things) that would impact the entire world -- large megacorps like Nike, Google, Citigroup, and Nestle would be given enormous power on par with a sovereign government.
This is honestly f-- crazy, like the plot of Shadowrunner. If this passes (the most powerful nations in the group are backing this strongly), the balance of power will shift over to corporations. This is happening right, behind closed doors. Not even congressional reps. know about this. The Washington Post, 49x winner of the biggest journalistic honor available (Pulitzer Prize), the Huffington Post, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal all have articles condemning this insanely power-hungry move by the megacorporations.
I am trying to spread this message, along with a lot of other political activists (this is a nonpartisan movement. no need to identify one way or the other). Please educate yourself on it. Do a quick Google search. I'll leave a few links below to try to help, as well as why the links are able to be trusted.
http://www.dancarlin.com/common-sens...-landing-page/ - The most popular podcast on iTunes. Carlin has a good podcast on this subject and how it plays into the world. If you have an hour, I highly suggest it.
http://www.exposethetpp.org/TPPImpactsYou.html - It is biased, but the website is run by a grassroots organization, not some crackpot conspiracy group.
http://www.citizen.org/TPP - This is by Wikileaks, whose founder was a former government operative. Just google Wikileaks and you'll see that it's one of the most reliable info sources on the planet right now. In fact, Wikileaks (in conjunction w/ the New York Times -- perhaps the world's most respected newspaper) is the organization that leaked the documents a week ago.
SPREAD THE WORD. The TPP is absolute cancer to the public's way of life. The world should be run AT LEAST by REPRESENTATIVE governments, where the citizens have some power, not by huge companies.
